“Graduates from Northwest State Community College will evaluate the impact of economic, political, social, and/or ecological systems on this and future generations.”
In April 2009, the Board of Trustees approved a sustainability learning outcome to be added to the list of Institutional Learning Outcomes for students. This ensures that the College will educate all students on the issue of sustainability and will assess the outcome by spring 2011.
Both curricula and co-curricula initiatives in sustainability are underway at Northwest State. The Engineering Division now offers both an associate degree and certificate program in Alternative Energy Systems Design and Alternative Energy Systems Service. A cutting-edge, in-house plastics recycling program is also underway in the engineering labs.
Students for Sustainability are also continuing their efforts on campus with an annual dumpster dive and waste audit; organic gardening; the National Teach-In on Global Warming Solutions; the offering of an environmental film series and various other activities.
